"Easter is not a time for groping through dusty, musty tomes or tombs to disprove spontaneous generation or even to prove life eternal. It is a day to fan the ashes of dead hope, a day to banish doubts and seek the slopes where the sun is rising, to revel in the faith which transports us out of ourselves and the dead past into the vast and inviting unknown." ~Author unknown, as quoted in the Lewiston Tribune

MagicMethod Classroom Chat Log Thursday, May 29, 2008

Today's MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Classroom Chat is up here!

Best Smart-Ass Remark of the Day
“Seriously, Maureen, I don't like what I see happening around my mouth.” ~ Recruiting Animal

Debbie
This is also my first time... I'm not sure what this is all about???

Maureen Sharib
This is an interactive classroom "chat" about phone sourcing. Animal’s being silly.

JC
Hi Maureen -- got a question about what you say when the gatekeeper asks, "And what is this in regards to"? Thanks

Maureen Sharib
Tell us JC, in your own words, what you say to the Gatekeeper when she answers.

JC
I usually say, "This is actually a confidential call and I'll need to speak with so-and-so directly, is he/she available?"

Maureen Sharib
JC, Your troubles started earlier than that. When she FIRST answered what did you say??

JC
I usually get sent into voicemail or told that they're not available. Occasionally I get through. Just feels like I'm using an "ethically-challenged" entry strategy.

Go here to read the entire class chat!

"Know thyself." ~ Socrates

While writing correspondence this morning to a friend and business associate, my propensity to tangent led me to a soul-baring reflection of what I perceived as my skills and my non-skills. As I elaborated, it came to me that this might be a pretty good exercise for everyone, so to-wit:

Take that proverbial legal pad and draw a line down the center. List what your Best Attributes are and what your Worst Attributes are. You’re the only one seeing this, so be brutally honest with yourself. Then look at it and think about it.

Curiously, as my list fleshed out, I started to see some inconsistencies in my self reflections. How can I be imaginative yet obtuse? Fearless but change-resistant? I can see how Intense/Tenacious and Hard Working could live happily together, how Meticulous could suffer Nit-Picky’s presence, how Driven could cohabitate with Stubborn but some of the others? Sheesh!

And herein lies the lesson – by recognizing what our Strengths and Weaknesses are, we learn to live (I just hit the o next to the i and typed “love” instead of “live”– curious, huh?) with ourselves. We learn to live (love) with ourselves. It bears repeating. Part of success in life I think comes when we’re comfortable in our own skins, and embracing what’s best/not so best about ourselves is part of it. Looking at my list, it prompted me to admit that some things weren’t so pretty - I can turn people off by appearing demanding/here comes the excuse: don’t they see that it’s my drive arising out of my need to be recognized shining through? No, most people don’t see inside you, they’re not mind-readers! So you have to be a little more gentle towards the world – that’s not so big a price to pay.

ALL my attributes make me who I am – the good and the bad, but being self-aware is what makes all of it work together. Somehow, someway it gets me through the day and allows me to do what makes me happy. Happy? Is Happy a skill? I think so!

Dangerous/wicked ideas

What do you think of the following quote?
“If librarianship is the connecting of people to ideas – and I believe that is the truest definition of what we do – it is crucial to remember that we must keep and make available, not just good ideas and noble ideas, but bad ideas, silly ideas, and yes, even dangerous or wicked ideas.”~ Graceanne A. Sourcing Training – Onsite Story

“...but they just give you the names – I don’t understand it,” he marveled as he looked wonderingly from me to the forty names on the screen and back again at me. “They wouldn’t do that for me!” he assuredly exclaimed, shaking his head back and forth.

“Why wouldn’t they?” I asked, turning in my chair and facing him across the small desk, from where he was watching me in action on the second day of the training seminar in Dallas last year.

He looked at me and answered, “I dunno, I just don’t think I could do it like you do it. I don’t know I could sound like you sound...”

“How does she sound?” his manager asked, popping his head in the door and overhearing our exchange.

“She’s so – smooth,” he hesitated, searching for just the right word. "She makes it sound like why wouldn’t they give her the names – she makes it sound like she belongs inside the organization!” he exclaimed, gathering his thoughts and picking his words. “She makes it look so easy!” he laughed.

Looking back at me, he asked, “Is it really that easy?”

“What do you think?” I questioned his question. “What about my approach looks so easy?”

“Well, you don’t say very much, like you told us you didn’t, yesterday in class...” he said, thinking as he went along. “And you don’t lie –I’m surprised about that, I really am. I have to tell you, I thought you’d have to tell some whopper of a story to get them to tell you anything...” he continued. Taking the thing apart, he continued. “All you do mostly is call, and then say, ‘This is Maureen Sharib, can you please tell me...?’ and most of the time they do!” he almost wailed. “I just can’t believe it!”

“It is easy, Larry,” I confessed, “but there’s a trick to it. I have tens of thousands of hours of practice doing this – I wear my craft like a second skin – I believe they are going to tell me what I want to know when I make that call and am surprised when they don’t. It goes across."

He looked at me and shook his head. “I see that – you sound so confident when you call, it’s almost scary! You’re deadly, aren’t you?” he asked, admiringly.

“Thank you,” I beamed, shaking my head in the affirmative.

“Fortune befriends the bold.” ~ John Dryden

Blogging - Oversharing or Healthy Bleeting?

No wonder we’re ready to confess our innermost thoughts to everyone: we’re constantly being shown that the surest route to recognition is via humiliation in front of a panel of judges.

Strength and Courage

It’s that challenge that best explains the emotional hold of the Kennedys. Whatever their personal and even tragic failings, the Kennedy message (the message that resonated so powerfully with the young back in the 1960s) was that we could step beyond our narrow personal concerns to achieve great things, that we could do better, be better, if only we had the strength and courage to work harder and dream bigger.

Whole story here.

Recruiting and Sourcing Literature

Adam Deane asked, a short while back, over on ERE:

I was hoping for some advice. Is there a consensus regarding which books on recruiting and/or sourcing are most beneficial for the experienced recruiter? I’m not really interested in a motivational type book.

What Do I Say NOW?

Many people don’t know what to say to the sourced names we provide. Because these names are many times the truly “passive” candidate some recruiters who’ve been reared on resume farming are “reluctant” to call someone who isn’t actually “looking”.

Just about everyone is “looking”.

Out of 10 names you telephone source:
1-2 will be looking at the present time
3-4 (maybe 5) will be interested in listening to you immediately
3-4 (maybe 5) will be interested in listening to you at some point in time
1 won’t be interested

“This is Maureen Sharib. You’ve been identified as someone XYZ is really interested in regarding an open position – do you have a few minutes to spend with me to maybe discuss this?”

“Huh? Who, me? How’d you get my name?” they might reply, surprised, but at the same time somewhat flattered.

Repeat yourself, s-l-o-w-l-y. Tuck in another question.

“This is Maureen Sharib. You’ve been identified as someone XYZ is really interested in regarding an open position they have in their marketing research department – might you be interested in this opportunity?

Be alert to any discomfort. Offer to talk another time that is more convenient.

“May I call you this evening at home regarding this opportunity? Would your cell be better? What is your cell/home number?”

Stay in control of the process.

If he sounds like he’s willing to talk right then and there, continue. Expect this:

“How’d you get my name?”

“You’ve been specifically identified by XYZ through research as someone who could help take them to the next level.”

Who could say no to this?

“Oh,” is many times the response.

“Do you mind if we spend a few minutes together chatting and sharing a little information? If you do have an interest, a representative from XYZ will contact you to answer any specific questions I may not be able to, but first, I need a little information – you’re a Market Research Analyst there, right?”

All questions may not get answered on this “first” call.

Education, past and present job responsibilities and level of skill/knowledge are usually easily discussed.

Keep the call short - ten minutes maximum but you can usually get quite a lot accomplished in five.

Don't forget to ask, if he turns out to be in the 40% or so range that may not be interested AT THIS TIME, "Do you know anyone who might have an interest in this position?" It never hurts to ask!

Running Straight and True

Bob and I went to see the third film in the Caribbean trilogy “Pirates of the Caribbean” shortly after it opened last year in May, 2007. Just recently I watched it again on a lazy Sunday afternoon and was reminded of this piece I wrote, though not sure where (or if) I ever posted it. I offer it now for your amusement.

The usurper of the pirate ship "The Black Pearl" and pirate lord of the Caspian Sea territory, Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), replies, gleefully, on the crew’s journey on a junk ship through a frozen ocean to rescue Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones' Locker. When someone in his crew wails that they’re lost on their quest, Barbossa agrees that surely they were lost, and that “you have to be lost to find a place that can’t be found – else-wise everyone would be able to find it.”

They continue sailing until an enormous waterfall is spotted on the horizon. The crew is alarmed, but Barbossa dismisses their fears and shouts for the crew to let the ship run "straight and true". They fall down the waterfall and into Davy Jones' Locker.

I sat up in my chair like I’d been hit by lightening. How many times have I not known where I was going; how many times have I started a search “lost” in the ether until I ran a course, “straight and true” that delivered me at my destination?

“If it were easy everyone would be doing it!” You’ve seen me post this occasionally at the end of some of my diatribes on telephone names sourcing. I guess it’s another way of saying “you have to be lost to find a place that can’t be found – else-wise everyone would be able to find it” with one concept added –you have to be lost.

You have to be lost before you can find your way and this is a concept that’s not very appealing to a lot of people. But sometimes you have to be able to let yourself go, to venture into those areas where you know little to nothing, before you can find a way. This takes faith and trust in oneself and how many of us have that?

“Cease trying to work everything out with your minds. It will get you nowhere. Live by intuition and inspiration and let your whole life be revelation.” ~ Eileen Cady

"Montaigne's practical, ethical response to injustice in an uncertain world is to ruse with the law."

The interiority of the self is one of the great framing fictions of the Essais, a fiction that provides the space and the opportunity for Montaigne to carry out both the encounter and the dialogue with himself that are his project, to fashion himself, and to negotiate the boundaries between the self and the socio-political outside. It also allows him to ruse with the law, to submit without submitting his soul, to obey without relinquishing his spiritual freedom, to consent to the law and simultaneously to critique it. It is not before the sanctity of the law that he bows but within the sanctity of the inner self. ~ Richard L. Regosin, University of California, Irvine

If you can wade through the big words, this is an interesting argument.

California Compete Covenants

California's ban on covenants not to compete gives departing workers substantial latitude to share critical ideas and knowledge with existing firms or spinoffs. Because this law predates the founding of modern technology industries in California, it probably contributed to the evolution of Silicon Valley's culture of employee mobility. As the Valley developed, court cases highlighted and reinforced limits on employers' ability to restrain the dissemination of their former employees' intellectual capital (see Hyde 1998 for two examples). Of course, departing workers are not allowed to reveal specific trade secrets. In this regard, California law is similar to that in most other states, under the Uniform Trade Secrets Act; in fact, California law provides somewhat broader trade secret protection than the model act (Gilson 1999). However, for workers with general industry knowledge, mobility in California is largely unrestrained.

More than half of US workers to skip summer holidays: poll

I don’t know that 1100 respondents correctly represents the nation, but…

More than half of Americans will not be taking a summer holiday this year, opting instead to stay home and save money as the US economy slumps, a survey published Wednesday showed.

"The economic downturn is leading to layoffs and stretched resources, which in turn leads to increased workloads and pressure to improve performance," said Tom Musbach, senior managing editor of Yahoo Hotjobs, which conducted the poll.

Fifty-one percent of the Internet giant's 1,100 respondents said in an online questionnaire that they would skip their annual summer holiday. That is a sizeable increase over 2007, when 45 percent went without a summer vacation.

"Employees, now more than ever, need a break from the pressure, but are instead choosing to forgo vacation in order to meet growing demands and protect dwindling wallets," Musbach said.

Forty-four percent of respondents said their workload is heavier today than last year, and 57 percent said they felt "burned out" -- up from 49 percent last year.

If this is true, there are sourcing implications...

Best Remark of the Day
“Sarah - the Sourcing in 10 minutes or less is what any recruiter should be able to do - get results in 10 minutes and get back on the phone.” ~ Shally Steckerl

Special Guest: Shally Steckerl, JobMachine founder

Jennifer Scott
Other than LinkedIn, what one other site would you recommend for networking with potential candidates, professional, not entry level, and cross function and industry? Where is your favorite place to find resumes?

Shally Steckerl
Jennifer Scott - I like xing, trybe, ryze, and ecademy but you can search them all from wink.com

Emily Vanderzwart
I recently started my own firm and am taking a chance at sourcing all passive candidates. Any suggestions on initally pitches to get candidates interested? I do mostly IT in trading and finance.

Shally Steckerl
Emily - you don't pitch or sell to passive candidates. Call from the perspective of LISTENING to them and understanding their needs, network with them and they will work with you.

Emily Vanderzwart
I guess, I mean because I call them at work, I introduce myself and then try to "pitch" them on why I can help but sometime I get, no and hung up on....

Dan Harris
What's your quick thoughts on Facebook marketing? Good Idea to have company page and branding?

Shally Steckerl
I also have a book http://jobmachine.net/products#books which is an excellent introduction to sourcing including some intermediate to advanced concepts

Shally Steckerl
Also regarding Diver I have a webinar on that here: http://jobmachine.net/products/webinarbundleDVD2008 and many of my friends have said that its the best webinar I've done so far

Shally Steckerl
Hello Dan! Nice of you to join us! Folks - Dan is a fellow CyberSleuth and one heck of a cool guy.

Memorial Sourcing

Memorial Day approaches and we sourcers all know what that means – one of our better sourcing opportunities draws near! Customers “in the know” understand that getting their “holiday orders” in early will assure a bountiful harvest of names when they themselves return to work after the festivities. They understand that as summer approaches some folks may be re-thinking their employment options and maybe it’s not such a bad time to be offering opportunities – after all, if you don’t have it "on the shelf” you sure as heck can’t sell it, right?

Some of the behavior that fuels all this busyness in our industry is the simple fact that while the cats are away the mice do play! Sourcers understand that while others are away “merry-making”, opportunity abounds in the emptied halls of corporate America. Knowing that many people will take advantage of Memorial Day by turning the approaching one-day holiday into a five day hiatus as offices empty the previous Thursday through the following Tuesday, sourcers can be assured the week approaching and the weeks after (they forget to change their VoiceMails when they come back to work!) a holiday VoiceMails will be loaded down with information fuller than a Memorial Day picnic table.

“Hi, this is Joe Smith – I’ll be back in the office on May 27, in my absence if this is a quality issue call Pete Jones at xxx xxx xxxx and if this is a test issue call the Test Manager at Susan Wheeler at xxx xxx xxxx and if this is a delivery issue call my manager Mike Kincaid at xxx xxx xxxx and if all this fails call my Admin - she usually ALWAYS answers - at xxx xxx xxxx.”

VoiceMails can be the darnedest, most revealing things!

Regular receptionists may also be away during this time as well, replaced by lesser experienced gatekeepers so experienced sourcers adjust their approaches during promising times like these. A “temp” is very likely to confess to you that she is just that to explain her lack of knowledge/skill and many of them are more easily “influenced” – shall we say.

Lonely Security Guards can be not-too-pleased that they’re the only ones required to keep watch at this time of year over extremely valuable information (after all, what’s MORE valuable to a company than their employees? Really?) and some of their angst can be consoled in the simplest ways. You’d be surprised how many of them have access to corporate directories and if they don’t, how much is stored in their heads from long years of service. The human brain is a computer too, you know.

These are just a few of the many reasons this time of year is so productive for sourcing – batten down your hatches sourcers – we’re coming into one of the busiest seasons in our business - summer! Customers, get your orders primed and delivered to your sourcers – many of them welcome this time-consuming work at this time of year (remember the Introvert theory?) It gives some of them a welcome excuse NOT to attend those holiday get-togethers!

Hard-nosed Gatekeepers

Interesting early '07 ERE string about Gatekeepers here.

I sense (and don’t get me wrong on this) irritation on YOUR part when you say things like “I know this is the operator, can you tell me your name please?” At this point you’ve already lost the battle. The main thing when dealing with receptionists/gatekeepers is to follow their suggestions obediently – chances are she will direct you somewhere that may be able to help you further. The object is to get inside – not to cross swords with the Gatekeeper at the point of entry!

TalkSourcing Radio Show TODAY!

The TalkSourcing Radio Show is today at 1pm (EST) on the Recruiting Animal's Radio Show here.

The Animal's segment starts at noon (EST) followed by TalkSourcing at 1:00!

You can call in to listen (and talk!) here: 646-652-2754. You will be able to hear the show but will not be able to speak until Recruiting Animal lets you in. Make sure that you are on a good phone and speak directly into the receiver.

To Call Online A "Click to Talk" button appears when the show is live. With Internet Explorer only. You also need a microphone to speak into your computer.

Is it too much to ask?

One of my MagicMethod students sent me the following remark (along with an enthusiastic testimonial for Magic!) that said:

"I once worked for a uniform company. My entry level job was to update the TMS (Territory Management System) forms via calling and asking for certain titles and extensions - then making changes to the database as we went along with each target company. It is crucial to monitor money making targets. Your very first module actually makes cash for those who know how to leverage the information via company ATD's."

As I read the words I realized the value of what his first hand experience was offering to phone sourcers – many people think asking for titles and extensions is an activity out of the ordinary – one that is sure to raise flags and get you blocked. It can, if you’re asking incorrectly! As evidenced by this past clerk-turned-phone sourcer the fact of the matter is Gatekeepers are receiving these kinds of calls all the time!

Lose the stinkin’ thinkin’ that so many of you engage in when you expect failure. Expect success!

Good Morning Maureen,
I am spending time with Module 1 and Telephone Directories. I am looking at logging in 75 hours of practice to get this discipline down. I have been in the office early today and called 3 companies before they opened to gather the bounty of names spilled by the automated system. LOL, I am now able to title identify the raw names and/or begin to build an org chart for these companies. I am amazed!!!!! Everyone in the search industry needs to be beating a path to your door to take this course.

The riveting 25 minute real-time telephone sourcing video will be shown!

The "Magic in the Method" is the only-of-its-kind telephone names sourcing training available today for persons interested in the little-understood practice of telephone names sourcing. Simply put, telephone names sourcing is the finding of people who hold specific titles (usually) within specific organizations (usually) so that you, as a recruiter, may contact them and offer them your opportunity. It’s the killer starter application (or should be!) for most of your searches!

Good Morning Maureen,
I am spending time with Module 1 and Telephone Directories. I am looking at logging in 75 hours of practice to get this discipline down. I have been in the office early today and called 3 companies before they opened to gather the bounty of names spilled by the automated system. LOL, I am now able to title identify the raw names
and/or begin to build an org chart for these companies. I am amazed!!!!! Everyone in the search industry needs to be beating a path to your door to take this course.

Maureen - can we talk about rusing...

Maureen Sharib
We can talk about anything you guys wanna talk about.

Kim Monmonier
sorry but what is rusing?

Maureen Sharib
Rusing is when you call and lie to get information.

Maureen Sharib
Ruse: Web definition - a deceptive maneuver (especially to avoid capture). Also spelled rouse and rouge as in, “I’m so ashamed by my lying that my cheeks turned rouge.” Word raises hackles for a lot of people. Some say it’s illegal to misrepresent yourself to gain any kind of information (this theory hangs on the unfair trade practices rulings), some say it’s not illegal but acceptable practice in love and war and recruiting tactics. A good researcher understands how to elicit information by ASKing the right questions in the right manner. Subject usually raises a firestorm of controversy resulting in name calling and mud slinging. The object of discussing rusing here is to point out that a good researcher does not have to ruse, it’s a choice each one makes on the front line of battle. CONTROVERSIAL: Rusing may be a right-of-passage, in so much that sourcers who began their careers “rusing”, that is, lying to get information, were made so uncomfortable in their psyches by it that they’re challenged to increase their skill sets to the point where it’s no longer necessary to ruse.

Maureen Sharib
That definition is from the Sourcing Glossary - if you want it send me an email: maureen at techtrak.com

The New Workplace Flirtation

In the realm of online dating, there is an awkward moment in which one party removes his or her profile before the other. By “delisting,” the removing party is basically saying that she (or he) is no longer looking. Interestingly, the way the delisting party figures this out is by logging onto the site and looking, which raises the issue of whether the other half of the couple is, in fact, completely not looking. You may be wondering what all this has to do with careers.

We are all getting used to the idea that it is all right to be keeping up with our professional network even if we are already attached — to an employer or a gig of our own design. When we post a profile on LinkedIn, we are basically saying that we are open to connecting, not necessarily that we are looking to leave our current situation. It is an age of permissible workplace flirtation, and we should all be involved in it. For those who are actively looking, why not post a profile on as many sites as possible? And whether or not it’s true, we can all be frequenting social networking sites under the guise of forging relationships in service of our current situation...Still, many people spiff up their profiles and start sifting through the profiles on various sites when they are getting restless. So the actively looking and the actively networking can happily co-exist. Whole post here.

High-Tech Japanese, Running Out of Engineers

Japan is running out of engineers.

After years of fretting over coming shortages, the country is actually facing a dwindling number of young people entering engineering and technology-related fields.

Universities call it “rikei banare,” or “flight from science.” The decline is growing so drastic that industry has begun advertising campaigns intended to make engineering look sexy and cool, and companies are slowly starting to import foreign workers, or sending jobs to where the engineers are, in Vietnam and India.

It was engineering prowess that lifted this nation from postwar defeat to economic superpower. But according to educators, executives and young Japanese themselves, the young here are behaving more like Americans: choosing better-paying fields like finance and medicine, or more purely creative careers, like the arts, rather than following their salaryman fathers into the unglamorous world of manufacturing.

Whole story here.

The Devil is in the Details Part II

Names sourcing follows two distinct paths and we're talking apples and oranges here. Internet sourced names delivers a different product than Telephone sourced names. It is possible to up your return on Internet names though with the highly refined and honed skills of those pulling them - guys like Glenn Gutmacher and Shally Steckerl and a few others demonstrate this to us everyday and companies realize this. These guys aren't relying on names services to feed their hungry channels - they're going outside those boxes that are being used by the masses and creating unique results with their imaginative and deeply honed skills. Their results, in all probability, more than likely triple the casual searcher's finds. In other words, great Internet sourcers can deliver a more lasered and unique candidate than what is traditionally available from the "services". This is a complicated subject and we could go on for many more paragraphs discussing the refinement levels of Internet Sourcers. This is a subject that is better addressed by one of them.

I believe the numbers I presented in Part I are the numbers that make Telephone sourcing tick.

Whether you're Internet sourcing or Telephone sourcing, the numbers that emerge form both deliver immediate value AND ongoing value. I believe telephone sourced names delivers a different value than Internet sourced names and I believe Internet sourced names by great researchers delivers a much higher value than research from a simple to ordinarily skilled Internet researcher. Of course it gets messy. It's hard to measure and someone said it well on one of the boards - names sourcing might be one of those things that can't be measured. As Richard Stack, President of RightFish recently noted, also on the boards, "there are various of other quality metrics that need to be considered, like uniqueness of candidate, qualifications/fitment, interview suitability, and competitor representation within the list itself, to name a few." I agree with him, again, when he says, "the residual value of quality name generation and candidate discovery typically goes unmeasured". I believe the voices that should be listened to on the subject are the voices that are actually in the trenches doing it.

Despite the hammering and yammering and jackknifing that is going on over this subject and all the current writhing commotion that is attempting to put names sourcing "in its place", and understanding there are other costs associated with handling these hires, think about it; what do even ten hires normally cost you in your organization? I offer that it's a whole lot more, and I mean a whole lot more, than the amount of money names sourcing costs you plus your costs of ownership.

From this point forward I can't really speak about the companies that are aggressively adding thousands of names per year into their pipelines because the projects (mine) really aren't much older than three years now at this writing and since I originally wrote this article one year ago we have entered a recession as severe as any I have witnessed in my fifty plus years on this earth. To report what things will be like next year I cannot. I can guess and my guess is that I'm going to be doing more of these large volume projects in the future for many more companies, recession or no recession. Names sourcing is one of those businesses that seems to benefit during a recession - go figger!

I can also tell you, once again, from my own experience, and for me, THIS is the real equalizer, I have hundreds of repeat customers and they would not be using me over and over again if what I was representing wasn't working. Names Sourcing has traditionally been the backroom secret everyone didn't want to talk about. Now that it's being discussed there are plenty of people howling. Interesting, isn't it?

Digital Rusing

Here’s a fascinating post by Claudia Faust over on RecruitingBlogs.com – it’s called “Digital Rusing”.

Dear Claudia,
I have started to practice flipping and x-raying sites. I am finding some really good stuff out there, but here is my problem: by mining deeply, I am getting to directories and files (especially Excel and Word documents) that are clearly not posted for public access. So my question is, should I be feeling guilty about using this information?

The Devil Is In the Details Part I

There was a question on the boards back in July last year over on ERE that asked a very perceptive question (and caused a firestorm (36 responses)of argument, some of it challenging my numbers):
“The thing is - if I am able to generate 50 names and profile those and we receive a hire from that great - however if we receive a hire from that and are able to generate relationships with the remaining 49 or so - how do you determine that value in terms of dollars, or can you? Say 6 months down the road one of those relationship benefits another job req and a another hire - how's that determined?”

All I can offer on this subject is my own boots on the ground experience. I have a few customers who use me for ongoing name generation for very large projects. Their needs are constant and pretty consistent and run into the thousands of names per year. Their packages are competitive and their reputations within their respective industries stellar. Their recruiting staffs are aggressively skilled in relationship building and closing candidates. In other words, they represent perfect storms.

What I am told, and what I can relay back to you, is that the pipelines they are building are delivering ever-increasing returns. In other words, if I give them 100 telephone sourced names on a particular project, they’re very likely to make 2-5 hires out of those names immediately, but the equally important component of this conundrum is that they continue to make more hires from those names as time goes on.

For instance, out of their initial investment of $4500, they can usually make three hires pretty quickly, in months 1 and 2. In months 3-6 they may make four more. In months 7-12 they may make a couple more. Let’s say they made 7 - 10 hires in the first year (my hands-on experience tells me they can make more than twice that number, but for sake of argument here and because the sourcing naysayers have such a strong and loud prejudice against these numbers being presented, much less accepted, by the recruiting community, I am offering about a third of what I know is really possible) out of all 100 telephone sourced names pipelined in that space in that year. Even this third makes the numbers rock, which, in turn, makes the Industry rock. So, using that third, there are “potentially” 90-92 hires left in that batch, right, that haven't been hired away, after one year? Remember, these people have the desired skills, carry the desired titles, come from desirable and specifically chosen companies and most are not actively looking, or even thinking about looking, for another job. Many of these people (if not most) have never been proactively contacted by a recruiter.

It should be noted here that I am NOT talking about companies in hiring spaces that are notoriously rock-hard competitive; these being defense, some areas of Big4 consulting and finance, healthcare and pharma/biotech. As I freely admit in Part II of this series, your mileage will vary industry to industry so DO NOT take the numbers I am reporting and slap them onto every industry. Understand your challenges before you make assumptions. To continue...

Where do you think those 90 some persons might go in Year Two? What are the chances that some more of them might switch jobs in Year Two?

Statistics show that a worker between the ages of 18 and 38 changes jobs an average of 10 times. That works out to a job change about every 2 1/3 years. So put a pencil to it, what are the chances that those 90 plus remaining mighty change jobs in Year Two? Pretty good? Do you think that there maybe exists the possibility that another 5-10 out of that remaining bunch might be on-boarded as well in Year Two? My customers do. My customers are doing it. They are developing viable processes internally to develop these potential hires and they are “developing” these people. The fish tanks are growing.

Today, there are 149 million people in our nation's workforce. Every year, approximately 50 million people leave their jobs. And approximately 50 million people find new jobs. That means one-third of our entire workforce turns over each year because of new opportunities. And, remember, the average American worker has had nine jobs by the time he or she is 34 years old because of new opportunities.

Now, there’s something being missed out there in the noun confusion between Telephone sourced names and Internet sourced names. If you “pull down” 100 names off one of the more popular Internet names services, like spoke, zoominfo or alwayson, there’s a good chance that the name is no longer there, the name’s title is misappropriated, the information is just plain faulty or the person is not suited to do what you need them to do. If you receive 100 telephone sourced names, you’re receiving, if you receive them from a names sourcer who knows what he’s doing, names and titles from specific companies, doing specific jobs, working specific verticals, holding specific titles. You just can’t get any more exacting than that. It’s what I am beginning to think of as extreme recruiting.

It takes far longer to hash through (interminably long, in my opinion) 100 names off zoom than it takes to sit down, fresh, at your desk in the morning and begin calling every single name with a guaranteed title, many of them with direct dials, from a “clean” telephone sourced names list that your telephone names sourcer emailed to you the evening before. If you find 25 out of the 100 off a names service like zoom, spoke or alwayson, that are "still there" AND able to do the job you need them to do for you in your own time-frame, you’ll be lucky. Out of those same 25, it’s a good bet, if it’s a challenging space you’re working to fill in, many of them will turn off to your approach because they’ve been approached over and over and over as a result of having found themselves landed in the electronic filing cabinets of those same organizations. In other words, if you can find them, and I’m referring to someone with “ordinary” search skills, don’t you think there’s a good chance they’ve already been “found”? What are the chances they haven’t?

Out of the telephone sourced names, and I’ve iterated this before, you’ll find all 100. Quickly. Easily. Efficiently. Smoothly. One reason for this is because a good names sourcer will assure you that you will find all of them; they will guarantee it. These names are custom sourced for you alone. They’re living inside the mortared walls and shuttered windows of companies and are usually very receptive to your novel approach. They are wildly bountiful.

The big elephant in the room here is this: What’s your time worth as a recruiter and, the even bigger elephant is, do you have the stomach to do the turnover that is required when “ferreting” out names? Few do and Time, my friend is the only thing in this world we can never get more of. It is truly priceless. Names sourcing is an incredibly time consuming process.

Watch for Part II coming soon!

10 Sourcing Sins

Ten Most Dangerous Telephone Names Sourcing Sins

You know how they say “when life delivers you lemons, make lemonade?” Many of you reading this have received this taunting but somehow haunting email missive in your spam folders of late:

“Special Offer For Single Men Only....The Ten Most Dangerous Mistakes YOU Probably Make With Women—And What To Do About It...” It then goes on to deliver “information” about the difference between how men and women think about dating - and why most women want to keep you from being successful.

So I got to thinking - why should single guys have all the fun? My thinking prompted me to write another series that revolves around the sourcing mistakes people make while telephone names sourcing and why most Gatekeepers want to keep you from being successful. It’s called, “The Ten Most Dangerous Telephone Names Sourcing Sins” and I hope you enjoy it!

Here are the Top Ten Reasons why people fail at sourcing and how to make sure YOU avoid every one of these deadly common telephone SOURCING SINS.

SOURCING SIN #1: Being Haughty
Have you ever overheard someone say to another on the phone, “If you don’t tell me who it is, and transfer me to that person, immediately, believe me, your job is in jeopardy!”

Ouch. How embarrassing. Of course you have.

Just like me, I'm sure you've overheard these unattractive, harsh come-on lines and cringed as you walked away from the highly charged fiasco. Every once in a great while it may have worked, but usually it fell soundlessly on the deaf ears of savvy Gatekeepers.

Instead – use the “Kiss Test”. The “Kiss Test” tells you how to tell if that Gatekeeper’s ready to be kissed.

I used to have no idea if a Gatekeeper was ready to be kissed. I’d be sitting there, phone at my ear, heart pounding, thinking to myself, “Wow, she knows all the secrets, and she could make my life so much easier,” but I didn't know what to do, or say next. This would often leave me kiss-less, and many times kiss-less for good, as I didn't think I had another chance.

Here's what I do now:
When I call a company, and I want to know if that Gatekeeper’s ready to be kissed, I'll listen to what she tells me when she answers her phone. “Good morning, ABC Corporation, Suzanne speaking,” has already delivered to me the tangible soft pout of her information – her name! I type it into my (silent) keyboard as I immediately and unhesitatingly introduce myself, “Hi, Suzanne, (repeating her name back to her – people LOVE the sound of their own names!) this is Maureen Sharib, can you please transfer me to the Finance department?”

While I am reaching out, gently touching her hair, I am listening intently for what’s going on in her background. Are there other phones ringing? People speaking? Does she sound young? Mature? Does she sound like she’s having a “bad” hair day (many times you can tell!) or does she sound relaxed, in control? Does she have a regional or country accent? Speak quickly? Does she sound rather perplexed by my question or does she sound like she knows exactly what I’m asking for? All these things register for me as I await her answer after having just gently touched the tips of her hair.

If I hear her “smile” and respond positively to me, I'll obediently answer any question she vollies back at me. “Do you have a name? We only have names and extensions here at the switchboard – you need a name to be transferred...” As disheartening as that sounds, and for all of you who know some of my methodology, (having taken my “Magic in the Method’ telephone names sourcing training) you know that I will indeed already have a “name" before I called; a “name” (or two, or three!) that I’ve gleaned either out of my old research or off the Internet somewhere for just this express purpose!

I say, “Yes, Suzanne, can you please transfer me to the Executive Assistant to the CFO?” As I’m reaching back over to her with this simple and surprising answer, (remember, I’m still stroking her hair), I glance down at her lips and back up to her eyes a couple of times.

“Huh?” you’re thinking. I won’t say “the CFO” – I give her the CFO’s actual name because I found it at Hoover’s – most of them are listed there, in the “People” section of the company’s information. Delivering to her what she did not expect me to be able to deliver, I’m still probing for information while delivering a subtle and rarely stood-down challenge that she many times finds irresistible.

“Do I continue to block this person?” is usually what’s going through her head once this one psychological tactic is employed. The finance office is a high enough priority in any company for her not to want to offend anyone; especially “anyone” who seems to know who heads the department - that same person many times being a direct report to the CEO. Without much effort I’ve delivered a subtle power play that resonates effectively with her. At this point I know if she’s ready to be kissed. She holds still, checking her information. “I’ll transfer you to Sheila Jones – she is Mr. CFO’s Executive Assistant and in case you’re disconnected, her direct dial is...,” she courteously and decorously answers.

By using the “Kiss Test” I've been attentive and professional, but by being very subtle I haven't given her anything she can object to. I now have a way of knowing if she's ready to be kissed that NEVER gets me rejected - and I know within two minutes what it used to take me hours or days to figure out.

There are a few other things* that inexperienced sourcers do that instantly tell a Gatekeeper you don't know what you're doing and ruin your chances of success. They are:
Talking/explaining too much on that first call
Hesitating in the delivery
Not identifying yourself
Being rude/demanding/disrespectful
Speaking unclearly or too low
Asking for things “too” out rightly
*Many of these will be more fully explored in the coming SOURCING SIN #7: Not Understanding Your Gatekeeper/The thing many sourcers do to capture the attention of a Gatekeeper that actually repels her.

“Be subtle! be subtle! and use your spies for every kind of business.” ~ Sun Tzu, The Art of War, Ch. XIII, The Use of Spies

In the coming days I’ll show you some exact steps and specific directions to help avoid the common infractions many people make while telephone sourcing. They will help you be more successful with telephone names sourcing - and you won’t even have to KISS any frogs!

Stay tuned for the nine additional Sourcing Sins sourcers commit. They are:
MISTAKE #2: Not Being Organized
Seven things you can you do to dramatically improve your actual working conditions OVERNIGHT. The best part is they cost very little in time or money yet they’ll increase your productivity drastically.

MISTAKE #3: Not Knowing Where The Information Is
Fun places to gather information that are FREE - no paying for expensive tools. (The author is gathering tools for this section as you read this – if you have any that you find especially handy, send them to her and your contribution will be noted! Send them to maureen at techtrak.com.)

MISTAKE #4: Approaching Incorrectly
How to approach a new company that you’d like to source from - and exactly what to say to start a conversation without “pick up lines”.

MISTAKE #5: Not Understanding How To Use Your “Tools”
How to use the “secret” voice weapon of language to capture and keep someone’s attention and help on the phone.

MISTAKE #6: Forgetting To Make Friends
The simple thing you can do at the end of the conversation with a Gatekeeper that leaves her wanting to help you some more.

MISTAKE #7: Not Understanding Your Gatekeeper
The thing many sourcers do to capture the attention of a Gatekeeper that actually repels her.

MISTAKE #8: Not Knowing What The “Answers” Mean
The “mixed signal” Gatekeepers give that throws off 99% of all sourcers.

MISTAKE #9: Letting Fear Rule

18th Century Probability Thereom May Lead to Improved Web Search

Pursuing the Next Level of Artificial Intelligence
Like a good gambler, Daphne Koller, a researcher at Stanford whose work has led to advances in artificial intelligence, sees the world as a web of probabilities.

There is, however, nothing uncertain about her impact.

A mathematical theoretician, she has made contributions in areas like robotics and biology. Her biggest accomplishment — and at age 39, she is expected to make more — is creating a set of computational tools for artificial intelligence that can be used by scientists and engineers to do things like predict traffic jams, improve machine vision and understand the way cancer spreads.

Ms. Koller’s work, building on an 18th-century theorem about probability, has already had an important commercial impact, and her colleagues say that will grow in the coming decade. Her techniques have been used to improve computer vision systems and in understanding natural language, and in the future they are expected to lead to an improved generation of Web search.

Fascinating article here.

Creatures of New Habits

HABITS are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine. “Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting herd,” William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the ever-changing 21st century, even the word “habit” carries a negative connotation.

So it seems antithetical to talk about habits in the same context as creativity and innovation. But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel synaptic paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks.

Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our own change by consciously developing new habits. In fact, the more new things we try — the more we step outside our comfort zone — the more inherently creative we become, both in the workplace and in our personal lives.
Complete, fascinating story here.

All Things Fade

That smart Sam Medalie said, yesterday, over on ERE:
Two months ago, I was searching for a great account executive on LinkedIn in Baltimore. I came across an office for a company that was well known and not in the technology arena. It only had (1)one Baltimore employee on LinkedIn. I contacted that candidate and while he was open to my opportunity, he wasn't interested in relocating. Two months later, I revisited that same Baltimore company and there were now 5 employees on LinkedIn. What does that tell you about where LinkedIn's going and what's happening to passive candidates?

Sam is asking for your ideas and though you're not asking for mine - here it is:

Although it may seem to some of us that LI is approaching hyper-warp speed in its growth there still is a very long way to go - the Universe is a mighty big space. Yesterday's LI birthday page (LI was 5 yesterday) stated LI had 22million members as of May 5. Though it is tempting to allow your eyes to pop out of your head at the number bear in mind that it is only a number - in five years I'd venture to say a good percentage, maybe even the majority of the information on LinkedIn's member profiles (and this will only increase as the network ages as all Internet info "ages") IS WRONG!

The fact of the matter is LI is a social network and many who "sign up" for the flavor of the month GO AWAY, never to return; consequently they do not keep their profiles updated, etc. Even though they've had the foresight to list themselves, they don't understand the power inherent in how the system can work for them; that in fact if they keep their own information "current" their own stock will go up faster than even LI's!

LI should be viewed as a means to an end - that's all - never an end product and if you allow yourself to use it in only that way your "results" are going to drop over time. As that may be "good enough" for the average recruiter who stays in the industry less than three years most assuredly it will not be good enough for the recruiter who stays in the business over the long haul, and I believe the majority of these will agree with me.

Here's another billion dollar idea guys, and I've been yoo-hooing about this for years: When someone (LI, will it be you?) figures out how to TRACK people who sign up at their networks in REAL TIME and in REAL SPACE (will this be done through cell phones? Through an opt-in Tracker system?) THAT someone will make a gazillion dollars because THAT real-time information will be priceless.

But even that will devolve as competitors move in and refine their offerings and sites like LinkedIn will seem so "yesterday" in the public consciousness. Remember AOL (one of the first social networks, as far as I'm concerned) in the 90s? Where are they today? Don't get too fixated or dependent.

Wrong and Right Gatekeeeper Approaches

This is a two plus year old ERE discussion string and addresses many of the same questions I get asked, over and over today.

What do I say when the Gatekeeper wants to know:
My name
My company affiliation
My business calling

IF she's asking you any of these three things chances are you've already blown it in your approach. There's a wrong way and a right way to talk to the person who answers the main phone at a company - do you know what they are?

Today's MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Clasroom Chat will address this topic today at NOON (EST) over on the MagicMethod network! Its' FREE - be there!

Who Will Tell the People?

Thomas Friedman offers a sobering picture...
We are not as powerful as we used to be because over the past three decades, the Asian values of our parents’ generation — work hard, study, save, invest, live within your means — have given way to subprime values: “You can have the American dream — a house — with no money down and no payments for two years.”

A few weeks ago, my wife and I flew from New York’s Kennedy Airport to Singapore. In J.F.K.’s waiting lounge we could barely find a place to sit. Eighteen hours later, we landed at Singapore’s ultramodern airport, with free Internet portals and children’s play zones throughout. We felt, as we have before, like we had just flown from the Flintstones to the Jetsons. If all Americans could compare Berlin’s luxurious central train station today with the grimy, decrepit Penn Station in New York City, they would swear we were the ones who lost World War II.

How could this be? We are a great power. How could we be borrowing money from Singapore? Maybe it’s because Singapore is investing billions of dollars, from its own savings, into infrastructure and scientific research to attract the world’s best talent — including Americans.

Who will tell the people? We are not who we think we are. We are living on borrowed time and borrowed dimes. We still have all the potential for greatness, but only if we get back to work on our country.

…millions of Americans are dying to be enlisted — enlisted to fix education, enlisted to research renewable energy, enlisted to repair our infrastructure, enlisted to help others. Look at the kids lining up to join Teach for America. They want our country to matter again. They want it to be about building wealth and dignity — big profits and big purposes. When we just do one, we are less than the sum of our parts. When we do both… “no one can touch us.” Read the whole post here.

Hard Times at the Golden Door

In these tough economic times, millions of Latino immigrants have stopped sending money to their home countries, according to a survey released Wednesday. That is bad news for a lot of people.

Times Topics: Immigration and RefugeesThe survey, by the Inter-American Development Bank, found that only half of 18.9 million Latino immigrants in the United States send money to relatives abroad. Two years ago, 73 percent did. Some countries saw remittances fall after years of growth: money wired to Mexico declined nearly 3 percent for the first three months of this year from the same period last year, the first drop since Mexico started tracking transfers in 1995.

The survey found that the sagging economy and loss of low-wage jobs were mostly to blame, particularly the downturn in the housing industry, but that crackdowns on illegal immigration also played a role.

The report was full of bad news for immigrants, legal and not. Of the 5,000 Latinos surveyed — about half citizens and legal residents, and half undocumented immigrants — 81 percent said it was harder to find a good-paying job, and just under a third said they were thinking of leaving the country.

There are people on the restrictionist side of the immigration debate who will cheer the news, arguing for more of whatever is causing it. Thanks to people like them, the nation’s de facto immigration policy is to try to make life untenable for illegal immigrants, elevating their fear to shake them loose from the United States.Read the whole article here.

FriendFeed: Finding signal in the noise

Creating Order Out of Chaos - FriendFeed...lets people funnel all their online activities into a single information broadcast, and then blast that broadcast to anyone who wants to listen in.

“It’s a great catch-all way for me to have all my stuff in one place, and it lets me see a more comprehensive view of the ecosystem of my friends,” said Ms. Brooks, 39, a business development director at an online video start-up company in San Francisco.

Companies like FriendFeed — and there seem to be a growing number of them these days — are trying to solve a problem that the Internet itself created. The proliferating number of blogs, user-generated content services and online news sources has created a dense information jungle that no human could machete his or her way through in a lifetime, let alone in an afternoon of surreptitious procrastination at work.

Search engines like Google, so effective for general information hunting, do a poor job of cutting through these thickets of user-generated material. For the Internet-addicted, the problem is further intensified by “lifecasting” services like Twitter and the Google-owned Jaiku, which let people use their cellphones to fire off Haiku-length text notices, both profound and mundane. Recruiting Animal
If you call into a small company in which there is only one receptionist and you don't get the names you need, when you call back do you only do it at lunch so you avoid the gatekeeper.
Maureen Sharib
NO I offered that to you in the event you were having trouble. When I call into a company I do it with the intention of getting her to cooperate w/ me from the GET-GO. It does not matter if it's small or large, I befriend her from the start. And when I "call back" repeatedly, sometimes it becomes laughable and the two of us do exactly that - we laugh at my "frustration"!
Recruiting Animal
She didn’t want to give you any info the first time so she doesn't care if you want to act like her friend the second.
Denise Gabbard
Maureen-- you are so right about befriending people from the start. I've heard recruiters (with lots of experience) be evil to gatekeepers, and then they don't understand why they can't get the info they want.
Maureen Sharib
What are you talking about Animal? You're assuming SHE DOESN'T WANT TO GIVE ME ANY INFORMATION!

29 of 30 Passive Candidates Weren't On LinkedIn

Interesting post by Sam Medalie over on ERE.
My company was recently retained by another company to source 30 sales engineers. The sales engineers had to be from the same suburban location in Virginia.
Of the 30 sales engineers that were ultimately identified, 29 were not on LinkedIn.
Are most of your candidates on LinkedIn or not on LinkedIn? Why?
