"Sourcing is a pain point."

How effective is your candidate sourcing? How productive is it end to end? When the Newman Group recently asked 500 staffing professionals where they felt the pain in talent acquisition, nearly half identified candidate sourcing (43%) as their greatest concern. And once candidates were found, they listed deficient skill sets (61%), job locations (49%) and competitive salary (47%) as the primary obstacles to hiring. The report goes on to examine results-driven versus passive approaches to sourcing tactics and strategies, recruiting operations, technology, recruitment strategy, and metrics. The study is titled Talent Acquisition 2008: Survey and Analysis of the Changing Recruiting Landscape.

Coincidentally, the Recruiting Animal had a Labour and Employment lawyer from Chicago named Charles Krugel on his Recruiting Animal Radio Show on November 19, 2008 and you can hear it here.

When asked if rusing was illegal (it starts at around Minute 58) he said, "There are no laws against it." Let me repeat. When asked if it was illegal to lie to a Gatekeeper to get to where you want to go inside a company he said, essentially, "No, it is not illegal."

So, that’s that. Agree or disagree, if you want to hear him say it, it’s near the end of his one hour interview - you’ll learn a lot (and be mightily amused) about who you can/can’t hire, what questions you can/can’t ask in an interview and much, much more!

Meltdown 101: What's deflation, and why is it bad?

Deflation might sound like a good thing. Yet it can be even rougher on the economy than the more familiar phenomenon of inflation, because it's harder to get rid of.

In the past year, record-breaking prices for oil, grains and metals caused serious worries about runaway inflation. And as the economic slump took hold, economists even considered the possibility of stagflation _ a period of rising prices despite slow economic growth.

But now, as the economic downturn continues, concerns are shifting from rising prices to the opposite extreme: the possibility of a destabilizing bout of deflation.

Argentines clicking on the local version of Yahoo in search of information about their country's most legendary soccer star (and current national team coach) are in for a disappointment. All they'll see is a disclaimer in Spanish stating: "Due to a court order requested by private parties, we find ourselves obliged to temporarily suspend all or some of the results related to this search." The only exceptions are links to major news media sites. Nor is this peculiar result exclusive to searches for Diego Maradona. The soccer star is just one of 110 major public figures in Argentina to have secured a court order restraining the Argentine versions of Google and Yahoo from serving up search results on their names.

What worries the search engines is that the ruling's legal principle effectively holds them responsible for the content of web sites turned up in their searches. More here.

The Win-Win Way to Play Office Politics

Q. You’ve been told that to succeed at work, you have to play office politics. You don’t care to play games; you just want to get your work done. What should you do?

A. As hard as it may be to accept, “any workplace that has more than two people has office politics,” said Peggy Klaus, an executive coach in Berkeley, Calif. Whenever Ms. Klaus gives speeches on this topic, people groan and contort their faces, she said. “They think they’re above the fray, or they deny that politics in their office exists, or they say it’s not important to them,” she said. It May Be a Good Job, but Is It ‘Good Work’?

ONE hot summer day many years ago, I boarded a bus heading up Madison Avenue with a driver whom I still vividly remember. A middle-aged man with a charming manner, he entertained his passengers with a lively monologue on the places we were passing and their history, alerts of great sales, his reviews of movies at theaters we passed and highlights of museum exhibits.

The driver’s name, I later learned, was Govan Brown. He was a local legend; by the time Mr. Brown retired in 1988, he had received more than 1,400 letters of commendation (and not a single complaint), and his retirement party was attended by hundreds of loyal passengers on the M101 route. Mr. Brown’s remarkable outgoingness, it turned out, was part of a personal mission: as deacon of a Baptist church, he viewed his passengers, too, as a “flock” whose needs he tended.

I was recently reminded about my encounter with Mr. Brown by Howard Gardner, the psychologist at Harvard best known for his influential theory of multiple intelligence — that there are a range of abilities that can lead to success in life beyond math and verbal skills. Mr. Gardner cited the account of Mr. Brown (which begins my book “Emotional Intelligence”) as an example of what he calls “good work” —a calling that combines excellent performance, expresses one’s ethics and offers a pleasing sense of engagement. Tamara Erickson, a researcher on generational differences in the workplace, found that more people in Generation Y — those born after 1980 — use a bottom-up approach to job searching.

“Boomer parents will tell me that they offered to introduce their son or daughter to a high-level person, but they don’t want to approach it that way,” said Ms. Erickson, who is also the author of “Plugged In: The Generation Y Guide to Thriving at Work.” “Getting in at the top is more of a boomer strategy, and the Y’s are using more of a peer-infiltration approach.” More here.

Tech Companies, Long Insulated, Now Feel Slump

The technology industry, which resisted the economy’s growing weakness over the last year as customers kept buying laptops and iPhones, has finally succumbed to the slowdown.

In the span of just a few weeks, orders for both business and consumer tech products have collapsed, and technology companies have begun laying off workers. The plunge is so severe that some executives are comparing it with the dot-com bust in 2000, when hundreds of companies disappeared and Silicon Valley lost nearly a fifth of its jobs. More here.

What Has Driven Women Out of Computer Science?

ELLEN SPERTUS, a graduate student at M.I.T., wondered why the computer camp she had attended as a girl had a boy-girl ratio of six to one. And why were only 20 percent of computer science undergraduates at M.I.T. female? She published a 124-page paper, “Why Are There So Few Female Computer Scientists?”, that catalogued different cultural biases that discouraged girls and women from pursuing a career in the field. The year was 1991.

Computer science has changed considerably since then. Now, there are even fewer women entering the field. Why this is so remains a matter of dispute.

What’s particularly puzzling is that the explanations for under-representation of women that were assembled back in 1991 applied to all technical fields. Yet women have achieved broad parity with men in almost every other technical pursuit. When all science and engineering fields are considered, the percentage of bachelor’s degree recipients who are women has improved to 51 percent in 2004-5 from 39 percent in 1984-85, according to National Science Foundation surveys. Market (Business/Competitive) Intelligence

Adding to Suzy Tonini’s well attended TalentTalkCafe Thursday’s subject on Market Intelligence I found this interesting link offered to one of her questions on the subject over on LinkedIn. The report is called “The Future of Global Market Intelligence 2008” and you’ll find it on the main page near the bottom. It being one of those lengthy Adobe docs with lots of graphs I took the liberty of summarizing it (and lifting some verbatim language) below. I might have bastardized some of the conclusions but I think I got it pretty close to right. You be the judge. I found it to be a fascinating report and I was somewhat dismayed that there was NO RECOGNITION of the importance that HR and staffing could play in this space. What’s up with that?

Market Intelligence – what is it?
Market Intelligence: Market Intelligence (MI, often also referred to as Competitive Intelligence or Business Intelligence) is a distinct discipline by which organizations systematically gather and process information from their external operating environment. The purpose of Market Intelligence is to facilitate accurate and confident decision-making that is based on well prepared homework, i.e. processed and analyzed business information. Insights generated through the Market Intelligence effort not only improve planning, decision-making, operations and performance, but also improve the clarity with which the voice of the customer is heard. Organizationally, Market Intelligence may be the name of the department that performs the roles of both market and competitor analysis.

Market (Competitive/Business) Intelligence allows you to make organizational decisions that are backed up by operational facts. Organizations with formal Market Intelligence teams in place are uncommon. However, the majority of companies today have some sort of program in place that systematically gathers and processes information that contributes to making vital and justified business decisions. Without a Market Intelligence program in place many decision-makers feel clouded by the magnitude of information available, therefore compelled to make poorly supported and often delayed decisions.

It is suggested that decision-making in organizations is only moderately efficient. It may be that gaps in numerical data (traditional Business Intelligence) impede decision making even more than those in qualitative market information. Regardless, way too often decision-makers feel that they do not have all the information available that they would need in order to make well informed decisions.

A small minority of decision-makers in companies that do not have a Market Intelligence operation in place find accurate information exactly when they need it. In companies with Market Intelligence operations, the far greater majority find the information at least after a short delay. Not surprisingly, about half of decision makers without access to timely market information obtain the needed information after a long delay or not at all. Clearly this should motivate any company to set up at least some sort of formalized Market Intelligence activities to facilitate more efficient decision-making.

Because of its soft nature, the impact of Market Intelligence activities is hard to measure and successful CEOs who recognize its importance rely on it in their decision-making and understand that investing in it further bolsters their confidence. This (CEO blessing) may be the single most important driver in Market Intelligence acceptance within an organization.

Because many organizations today rely on an informal mashing of information from several departments (sales, marketing and product development) there is some information that either slips away or is misapplied. One of the key ingredients in the success of any enterprise is the quality of decisions made in the organization. In the long run, it is quite self-evident that the quality of the information that backs up decisions is one of the key drivers of the organization’s eventual success. The facts that support and offer a solution to this dilemma are as follows:

The efficiency of corporate decision-making suffers from the lack of timely and accurate business information to back it up
The level and age of MI operations differs significantly between regions and industries
A sophisticated Market Intelligence operation can significantly improve the efficiency of decision-making
Going forward, the need for systematic MI will still increase, as decision-making will continue to be distracted by random and non-processed data

The knowledge-intense industries of healthcare, technology, media and telecom are utilizing Market Intelligence actively nowadays with chemicals, trade, logistics and transportation industries still looking to launch one. The green movement is driving energy, utility and materials companies to invest in Market Intelligence. Europe and North America are using Market Intelligence most effectively with expectations for strong adoption in the near future in Latin America.

Many expect that the efficiency and quality of their Market Intelligence operations will be improved in the future by outsourcing parts of the process to external partner companies. The current global economic downturn is bolstering the need for further investment in Market Intelligence. External Market Intelligence services may be a good solution during an economic downturn in the sense that purchased services will flex up and down, and it is relatively easy to measure and control both the investment in MI and the impact of it.Using external services instead of increasing internal headcount and investing in information sources and software has become a viable option for companies with the increasing availability and sophistication of Market Intelligence services in the market.

The Cash-Strapped Turn to Barter

CAUGHT in the credit vise of 2008 that is threatening their livelihoods, small-business owners are turning in droves to an age-old source of commerce: the exchange of goods and services, or barter, to hold on to their precious cash.

New money is not flowing to Main Street. Since October 2007, there has been a decline of almost 30 percent in loans approved for small businesses, the Small Business Administration reported.

Companies short on cash are often forced to let workers go, and in October alone companies with 50 or fewer workers eliminated 25,000 jobs, according to the ADP Small Business Report. More here.

Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to cut up to 6,000 jobs, or 18 percent of its global work force, as sales of its high-end servers have collapsed.
The drastic move announced Friday highlights Sun's desperation to cut costs and survive as an independent company. Sun's shares have fallen so steeply they've crossed an ominous threshold, driving the company's market value below its cash on hand. Read more here.

Today's (TH, Nov 13) MagicMethod Classroom Chat Agenda


Today's Guest Teacher on the noon hour MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Classroom Chat will be our very own Todd Burkhardt and since he feels most of us on the forum are beyond Sourcing 101 the subjects he'd like to cover today are as follows:
Generating interest when sourcing.

We'll touch on the topic of rusing (for purposes of this being an individual choice, and that the most effective methods for people come down to what they are most comfortable with - plus can we get certain information without rusing - we want to stay away from the ethics debate and focus on is it neccessary or not, can your sourcing be effective without it, etc); further with rusing can you get xyz information from xyz company or xyz person with/without it.

Also a point/counterpoint match: If someone finds a flaw with an approach, what is it and what is your solution to it. Everyone today might consider spending a little time on the hotseat with your strategies to a given situation. For instance we'll be talking about a task quite a bit harder than just getting the name of the sales manager at a door company; instead how do you find direct reports to Sina Tammadon at Apple? This will demonstrate some perspective around what Todd's clients ask of him because they want competitive intelligence in addition to candidates.

The issue of respect for the person you are talking with whether it is research, sourcing, recruiting, business development etc.

This may be a lot to try and cover in 1 hour, but Todd and I think we can really accomplish something good today. That's sort of our random ideas on what we might be able to do today.

What if the Internet went away?

We have been and are building our businesses around the internet. What if the internet, as we know it was either taken away or became too expensive for us to access large enough distribution of our product? What would we do? Is this really possible? Is there a plan B?
Is it conceivable that only the largest and wealthiest companies could be left standing?
Can you imagine having access to only about 200 sites?
Can you conceive the cost of having to pay for any additional sites accessed that were not part of the package?
We are becoming completely dependant on the internet for our marketing, what would happen to our businesses if it became cost prohibitive?

Breathless

I’m out of breath from my first day on Twitter. Sure, I joined it a while ago but in the usual fashion of my late adoption habits only really took a look at it on Sunday at the urging of the Recruiting Animal. “You’re going to love it,” he promised.

I DO love it. What I loved about yesterday’s obsessive marathon was watching the steady stream of remarks (ideas) flow into the stream. It prompted so many ideas for me that my usual Edge posts skyrocketed from 1-2 a day to 8. I think the quality of the posts was a little more interesting too (you be the judge).

“How did you know I would love it?” I queried Animal in an e-mail late in the day. He answered, ever-so-promptly as he usually does, “Once you get the hang of it, it's fun. And you (in particular) get to put out your message to thousands of people. How could you not like it?”

How could I not like it? I can see I’m gonna’ hafta’ control myself with the heavy-handed “advertising” (Twitter does that for you really by limiting your remarks to 140 characters) so maybe the forced regimen will teach me some new habits. Many would be relieved to see that happen, but, I beg them to remember this.

So, for now, I have a new toy. I don’t see the shiny wearin’ off any time soon.

Get a White House Job - Here's How



President-elect Barack Obama has launched a Web site to chronicle his transition. Within 24 hours of last week's historic vote, his transition team rolled out change.gov, a Web site that promises to be "your source for the latest news, events and announcements so that you can follow the setting up of the Obama administration."

The site is still a little thin on content, but there's a blog, a newsroom and a countdown to the January 20 inauguration.

Visitors can fill out a form to share their stories about what the election meant to them, or they can give their vision of an Obama presidency. They can even apply for a job.

50 Women to Watch

In her concession speech in June, Hillary Clinton lamented that she wasn't able to "shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling," but she said it now has "about 18 million cracks in it."

Indeed, women played a defining role in this year's historic election, whether as candidates, spouses or comedians.

Social Networking Sites Dos and Don'ts


Certain predicted technological revolutions are more myth than reality.
After all, TV phones and laserdiscs were hailed as the wave of the future and yet, despite influencing today's technology, they've gone by the wayside.

Social networking sites might have seemed as if they'd follow the same route, but all signs suggest they're here for the long haul.

Employers are checking job applicants' profiles on sites like Facebook, Brightfuse and LinkedIn, according to a recent CareerBuilder.com survey.

Twenty-two percent of employers say they use social networking sites when evaluating job candidates, and an additional 9 percent intend to do the same soon. Yet, only 16 percent of workers with social networking profiles have modified their pages with potential employers in mind. Read more here.

LinkedIn Users - Who They Really Are


Millions of people have been queried, invited and even cajoled into joining the business social network LinkedIn. And more than 30 million of them have accepted. But while we knew LinkedIn members used the site for business reasons -- vs. the more purely social networks such as Facebook or MySpace -- we didn't know exactly who they were. Some are looking for jobs, others want to network and more than a few just jumped on the bandwagon.

Until now. LinkedIn's recently adopted policy of allowing market researchers to survey its members makes it easier to find out who they are and target them for both research and marketing. The first public study of users' demographics and psychographics has just been completed by research firm Anderson Analytics, along with LinkedIn and text-mining company SPSS.

What they found is that LinkedIn has moved beyond an online niche tool. Its members span a wide range of ages, industries, job titles, and education and income levels. Find out now.

Entrepreneur Guy Kawasaki doesn't accept failure

Tuition Free Colleges

Pssst! Wanna Go to College for Free?

Tim Stroud's alarm goes off at 3:40 a.m. every weekday morning, a time when most of his classmates at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo., are fast asleep. By 4:30 a.m., he is out in the pasture in his work boots gathering the college's herd of 50 Holstein cows into the barn for their morning milking session. His unusual campus job -- working in the dairy 15 hours a week -- is a small price to pay for what he sees as one of the best deals today in higher education: a free degree.

At the College of the Ozarks, all students' tuition costs are offset by a mandatory work-study program. "If I was going to go to school, I was going to try to do it with the least amount of debt possible," said Stroud, a sophomore from Hume, N.Y., who wants to pursue a career in agriculture.

The cost of college is a red hot issue today, with students and parents fretting about how they will be able to foot the skyrocketing tuition bills at many private and public colleges. The College Board reported on Oct. 22 that tuition at public and private colleges for the 2007-08 academic year continued to outpace inflation (BusinessWeek.com, 10/22/07). Tuition prices at private colleges and universities average almost $24,000 this year, and that's not including room and board. Read more here.

This week we’ve seen great success and great failure in our national elections. On Thursday in the MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Class Chat we’ll be continuing this week’s discussion on failure.

12:11pm Tom Cook With the state of the economy people are afraid to make a change even if they really want to. This is going to have a significant impact on our business for several months. Let's not lose sight of the fact that the long term outlook for our industry is still very good. The next 6 months are going to suck but if you like what you are doing and you stick it out - it will be worth it.Success or failure is all a state of mind. If you think you are going to fail, you probably will.

12:30pm Maureen Sharib Julia - those answers have an element of blaming others in them. What if a candidate said, "I failed because I was an asshole and I had my priorities screwed up."

12:33pm Paul Davenport There is nothing wrong with a candidate who shares personal failure...however, I would steer the interview towards professional failure.

12:35pm Maureen Sharib What motivates others to give us the names...Dayna, I think you can "hear" when a gatekeeper responds to you positively... if you can't pick up these nuances I think you're lost.

12:39pm Maureen Sharib It is intuitive. I don't think it can necessarily be "learned" but a natural tendency towards it can be mightily refined.

MagicMethod Tuesday Phone Sourcing Class subject: Failure

One of the students ruminated last night over on the Yahoo student group for "The Magic In the Method":
Are there any people who took Maureen's course and are just trying to make a living as a name sourcer? If so, when was the last time you received a paycheck or are you just failing? I took Maureen's course about 5 months ago. It turned me on to the world of research. Yes, I have made about $20,000 in the last several months, but things seem to be slowing down. Anyone have any stories about how they are doing or how they are turning things around?

I answered:
I know you know that things have slowed everywhere - the trick in times like these is to stay focused and on your mark for when things pick back up and they will PICK BACK UP! Use this time to develop your networks, tune your mailing lists and message, read, study, learn, write, continue to grow. These are OPPORTUNITY TIMES -many will become discouraged and fall away and you will be left. Keep yourself intact - don't fall to pieces like so many will. Believe.

Slightly more than a scant two years ago one of those lively "discussions" (75 replies) broke out over on ERE about the effectiveness of cold calling into companies. The original proposition asked for advice/thoughts from the group about the legality of calling into a company on behalf of a client to "poach" employees. The supplicant had been asked to stop calling by an alerted HR director and wondered if he was putting his firm into legal jeopardy. As you can imagine, the opinions waged and raged over a broad spectrum.

More than halfway through the responses this seemingly forgotten piece of logic is to be found: "Let's continue to have a free flow of ideas without violating basic rules of rhetoric and debate. Let's use facts, not nebulous notions about ethics -- which is a society's norms of right and wrong -- which constantly change and in debate, become demagogic."

Yesterday the following question was asked over on LinkedIn:
"Which song lyrics would you take as a model for business ethics? In a nutshell what are the fundamental sayings within?"
Allow me to suggest that the words of Allen Shamblin and Steve Seskin might apply to both these subjects:
